The national domain name which ends co.uk is the extension used by more than 52 million pages, whose contents are pornographic, making the UK one of the most popular locations in the world to host adult websites, the survey showed.
The company which registers pornography is called Nominet UK and as the report says it has no restrictions to register the sites under British domain name.
It is quite recently that the UK government has launched a nationwide campaign to restrict websites that contain child porn and abuse.
Nominet has been called by John Carr, a government adviser on child internet safety, to ban websites containing certain words like rape.
He has called on the company to end “free for all” strategy.
“The UK should not provide succour and comfort to porn merchants”, said Carr.
To prevent “abusive behaviour” Nominet is asked by Ed Vaizey, the communications minister, to introduce its plans explicitly.
The minister said he took Mr Carr’s complaint “extremely seriously”.
“Ministers and parliament must be satisfied they are entirely happy with the way that Nominet discharges its responsibilities”, said Carr.
“Nominet should have a policy that websites registered under the national domain name do not contain depraved or disgusting words. People should not be able to register websites that bring disgrace to this country under the national domain name”, he added.
This is while that the US is home to nearly two-thirds of the world’s pornography.
However, Britain hosted six times as many porn web pages as Germany in fourth place and ten times as many as France in fifth place.
