Donald Trump said Tuesday the refusal of the tech experts familiar with Hillary Clinton’s private email server to testify before Congress shows the controversy is bigger than Watergate.
Bryan Pagliano, the specialist that set up Mrs. Clinton’s server, ignored a subpoena to testify before House Oversight Committee earlier in the day. Other tech officials appeared, but asserted their Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.
“Now that the people who destroyed the emails are all pleading the Fifth Amendment in front of Congress today,” Mr. Trump said at during a campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa.
“Have you seen that is going on before Congress? Fifth Amendment, Fifth Amendment, Fifth Amendment — horrible, horrible.”
“Anyone watching today’s hearing in Congress knows that Hillary Clinton’s actions are far more corrupt than we ever imagined,” he said. “This is far bigger, and a far bigger scandal, than Watergate ever was, but with Watergate we had justice, we had a Justice Department that went after the people.”
Earlier this year, FBI Director James Comey recommended that no charges be filed against Mrs. Clinton, saying she was “extremely careless” in handling classified information, but said there was not enough evidence to prove that she intentionally mishandled classified information.
Mr. Trump, however, has said the episode is yet more evidence of Mrs. Clinton’s poor judgement and why she cannot be trusted as president.
